Every voice comes back to you, as words.

kodama is a menu bar app that listens to your microphone and to the sound your Mac plays, and writes both down as they happen. Transcription and telling speakers apart happen only on your Mac. Neither the audio nor the text is sent anywhere.

Your voice never leaves your Mac

Transcription, telling speakers apart and picking out names all happen on your Mac. The audio you record and the text it becomes are sent nowhere, including to us.

Recording starts only when you press Start Recording. Opening the app records nothing.

kodama goes online for three things only

Signing in to memon
Checks your account and licence. Signing in is optional: recording, transcription, speaker separation and export all work without it.
Checking for updates
Asks kodama-app.tuzuru.io whether a new version is out. You can turn this off in Settings.
First launch
Downloads the speaker-separation model (about 40 MB) from Hugging Face.

None of them carries any audio or text.

Their voice, and yours

kodama takes in what you say into the microphone and what your Mac plays (the other side of an online meeting, a video) at the same time, and writes them down in real time, each in its own colour.

Capturing your Mac's sound does not need screen recording permission.

And who said what

kodama tells the voices on the other side apart and colours each line by speaker. Name the speakers afterwards, and the names carry into anything you export.

To separate the voices on your microphone too, turn it on in Settings.

Read, listen and pass it on

Every recording stays in your library until you delete it.

Search
Find any recording by what was said in it.
Play back
As a recording plays, the line you are hearing lights up and the transcript follows along.
Names and terms
People, products and other names that come up are listed beside the transcript, with how often each appeared. Needs Apple Intelligence to be turned on.
Notes
Keep notes and images with each recording.
Export
Save as plain text, Markdown, HTML or audio.
Send to memon
Keep a transcript as a memon note. Included with a paid memon licence.

Free, from recording to export

kodama is free to use. The free version shows the last 30 minutes of each recording.

Anything earlier is hidden, not deleted. With a paid memon licence, the whole recording is there to read.

Free

  • Recording, transcription, speaker separation and export
  • Read, play back and export the last 30 minutes of each recording
  • Everything earlier stays on your Mac, hidden but intact

With a paid memon licence

  • Read, play back and export every recording in full
  • Send transcripts to memon as notes
  • No extra charge for kodama

If your licence ends or you sign out, your recordings stay. Nothing is deleted.

Languages

The app is available in 16 languages.

Speech can be transcribed in English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Korean.
